We're going to share with you two secrets well-known to lighting experts.
- Color of light has a "temperature"
- Lighting can affect your mood
Artists use the terms "cool colors" and "warm colors" to describe the feeling certain hues evoke. Put a blue filter over a photograph, and suddenly the subjects look chilly. Put an orange filter over that same photograph, and it looks like summertime.
Lighting experts also use temperature to describe color, but oddly, to the opposite effect. A halogen headlight is 3,200 degrees Kelvin (the actual temperature of the bulb's filament), and produces a warm, yellow color. The sun's surface is 5,600 Kelvin, and produces a cool blue color. The hotter the temperature, the cooler he color.
Speaking of the sun -- as many as 26 percent of Americans suffer Seasonal Affective Disorder. This is a state of depression caused by too little light exposure in winter. Workplace studies, similarly, have found employees are more sociable and productive when the work environment is brightly lit, rather than dimly lit.
Interior lighting experts could have told you that without the need for a scientific study. For years, lighting designers have recommended warm-colored lights in the 3,000 Kelvin range for living rooms, bedrooms, and restaurants, to imbue a relaxed atmosphere. By contrast, 5,000 to 6,000 Kelvin is considered good for industrial lighting, and places where high productivity and focus is needed.
This has been a roundabout way of saying you want to try Ford's new Crystal Diamond Light LED headlights, now available on both the Ford F-150 and the new Ford Fusion.
Your old halogen headlights glow at the same temperature recommended to make restaurant guests feel sleepy.
Sleepy is the last thing you want to be while driving!
Crystal Diamond Light glows at 5,600 Kelvin -- the same as broad daylight. It's a color designed for better visibility, and a more focused, alert attitude behind the wheel.
