Delivering pizza can be a great way to make money and get tips when you're first starting out, but it's not a career most kids dream about doing when they grow up. For Ford's nascent self-driving Fusion Hybrid, however, it is.
The plain truth is, autonomous cars are coming. Many automakers, including Ford, are developing them as we speak, and are actively working with both machine-learning experts and traffic regulation agencies to get them on the road.
The question is, what role will autonomous cars play?
Some claim that personal car ownership will be a thing of the past, and we'll all get rides through self-driving taxis, but Ford's new CEO Jim Hackett says he's not sure that will be the case.
Ford is exploring all the options for their self-driving prototypes, and one promising field is food delivery.
This month, Domino's joined forces with Ford to have several pizza deliveries made by an autonomous Fusion Hybrid.
"As delivery experts, we've been watching the development of self-driving vehicles with great interest as we believe transportation is undergoing fundamental, dramatic change," said Patrick Doyle, Domino's president and CEO. "We pride ourselves on being technology leaders and are excited to help lead research into how self-driving vehicles may play a role in the future of pizza delivery."
