Very recently, Ford applied for a patent on what it labeled Luminescent Vehicle Moldings. The patent was discovered by a FocusRS Club forum member and seems to describe a unique way to illuminate body panels using electronics that respond to “light excitation.”

This very intriguing invention has us and many auto publications wondering what Ford is going to do with the “photoluminescent” panels. On the automaker’s patent application, there’s a diagram of a Mustang and numbers which correspond to detailed notes about the new technology.

One notable mention is that the moldings can be set to emit light of varying intensity, so they shine brighter when the brakes are applied or dimmer when a vehicle is in idle, which were a couple examples included by Ford. The patent also mentions different light colors, specifically blue and red, and says that with these colors the moldings may function as brake lights.

Yet another interesting detail included in Ford’s patent application is a note about how the technology can be incorporated with an exterior door molding, so that when a door is opened it illuminates and becomes more visible to oncoming cars. In addition, blinking lights, “decorative” lighting and many other things are also mentioned.

We’re very curious to see if the new Luminescent Vehicle Moldings are integrated on the Ford lineup in coming years. The range of functional and stylistic implementations is exciting to think about. If you want to see the patent application for yourself, check it out here.
