If safety is something high on your list of musts when it comes to purchasing a new car, the 2017 Ford Fusion is one of your top options. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an independent, nonprofit research company, put the new Fusion through its battery of crash tests and the car passed with flying colors.
Test categories included moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints, and the Ford Fusion earned the highest score of “Good” in all evaluations. To earn the title of Top Safety Pick+, which is the institute’s most elite honor, Fusion’s available front crash prevention system also had to pass the IIHS’ standards; and it did just that, receiving the highest score of “Superior.” An optional new active braking system, as well as revisions to the Fusion’s front-end structure, contributed to helping it win the Top Safety Pick+ title.
Along with earning accolades from the IIHS, Fusion’s forward collision warning feature also meets criteria set by the government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“The 2017 Ford Fusion is our most advanced car yet and we’re proud to see it recognized by NHTSA and the IIHS for its safety performance too. Great new features include a pedestrian detection system and hands-free parallel and perpendicular parking capability, as well as existing optional lane-keeping assist and Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert,” said Bill Strickland, chief program engineer, Ford Motor Company.
