Recently at the North American International Auto Show, Ford's leadership team made a big announcement about the expansion of the brand's SUV lineup. Due to the popularity of sport utility vehicles, Ford plans to introduce four brand-new SUVs, none of which will be based on current models. In addition, the company says that the new SUVs will debut within just a few years. Why are they expanding? According to the company, a third of vehicles sold in the U.S. today are SUVs and their expected to make up an even larger percentage of the automotive market over coming years.
We'd already heard that the Bronco and Ranger could see a return to the U.S. market, which left us to wonder mostly about the third new SUV that Ford plans to introduce. Sources suggest that the automaker may bring one of its non-U.S. models, the Ecosport (pictured above), to the states. The Ford Ecosport is a subcompact SUV, which recently received a design update, quicker steering and enhanced suspension performance.
Ford's current SUV roster includes the Escape, Edge, Flex, Explorer and Expedition. In a few short years, we'll be excited to see new names added to this list and we'll keep you updated as more details arise.
