Ford All Wheel Drive Vs. Four Wheel Drive

AWD vs 4WD - What's the Difference?

There is a long list of features that are available in all types of cars available in the industry. You may have the chance to choose between 4WD and AWD, depending on the specific make and model you're looking to own. It can be easy to assume they're the same thing, but there are many differences in how they work. You can review a few of the differences between both options to ensure you feel good about the decision you make while buying a new car.

What is All-Wheel Drive?

Vehicles with all-wheel drive have a powertrain that delivers power to each wheel on the front and back of the car. The AWD mode has the ability to operate full-time to ensure the four wheels are always in motion. A two-wheel drive is used most of the time when the part-time system is in use, but it can switch to an all-wheel drive whenever you need more traction under the car.

When you use all-wheel drive, you don't have to do anything to make it function. There are still a few specific models available that offer some options for control. The wheels get enough torque through differentials, clutches, and couplings.

What is Four-Wheel Drive?

Four-wheel drive is often standard on larger models with trucks and SUVs because the larger vehicles need more power to stay planted on different types of roads and surfaces. A set of differentials is used on the rear, front, and center with the use of couplings and transfer cases to give power to each of the four wheels.

When your car uses 4WD, it sends torque to each of your wheels and can be used part-time or full-time, similar to all-wheel drive. You also have the option of choosing between low and high ranges as the car is in use. You can do this by using the lever or electronic switch provided. If you need extra traction, the lower setting will work the best. The high setting is more ideal for surfaces like gravel, snow, and sand.
