For 2021, the midsize crossover Ford Explorer gets some changes to its list of features, including more standard amenities and available packages on several trims. The XLT trim gets a Sports Appearance package that includes a mesh grille, upgraded wheels, and dual exhaust outlets to give this Explorer model more athletic styling.

2021 Explorer Trims & Features

The 2021 Ford Explorer is produced in five trims. It is a midsize SUV with three rows and seats for six to seven depending on whether you choose to get captain's chairs. Two engines are offered for the 2021 Explorer, including a four-cylinder and a V6. The base model is equipped for comfort and performance with a hands-free liftgate, a power-operated driver's seat, and split-folding seats in the second and third rows that provide more room for people or cargo as needed. The base trim's infotainment includes an eight-inch display screen. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay smartphone integration is standard. The base trim comes with remote monitoring capabilities and a Wi-Fi hotspot as well.

The second trim in the lineup is the XLT. A more upscale cabin is the main focus of this trim. Standard features include keyless entry and ignition. Heated front seats are an added amenity, and the steering wheel is encased in leather. You can choose to get captain's chairs with this trim, and it also adds USB ports in the back row. With the Limited trim, you'll get more upscale cabin features. Interior ambient lighting and leather seats are added to the Limited, along with a heated steering wheel. The Limited trim also has an available hybrid powertrain.

It also gets navigation, wireless device charging, and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. Heated seats extend to the back row as well, and you will get some additional safety aids. The ST is the sportiest version of the Ford Explorer. It gets paddle shifters to help you control gear-shifting, along with sportier front seats and a sport-tuned suspension. The ST adds a few extra safety aids. The lineup culminates with the Platinum trim with premium leather seats and adaptive headlights.

There are two gasoline engines available for the 2021 Ford Explorer. The first engine is a turbo 2.3L with four cylinders. This engine's maximum power reaches 300 HP. Its maximum torque is 310 LB-FT. The ST trim gets a turbocharged V6 engine, with an increased power output of 400 HP and 415 LB-FT of torque. Both engines are paired with automatic transmissions. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is available and standard on the Platinum. The hybrid powertrain includes a 3.3L V6 mated with an electric motor for a combined 318 HP.

Ford Explorer Safety

All 2021 Explorer trims have advanced safety technology such as blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, and lane-departure warning lane-keeping assist.
